FORTE BEGATO AND GRANAROLO-BEGATO SPORTS PARK, Genoa
Permitted uses: Hospitality, Retail, Office, Land, Education
PROPERTY
The site is strategically located on the northern hillsides of Genoa, situated within the Parco delle Mura—a historical and environmental heritage system distinguished by its monumental fortifications, expansive woodlands, and panoramic urban vistas. Within this context lies Forte Begato, a part of Genoa’s western defensive system, featuring a landmark historical barrack set within an extensive verdant plateau. The current operational phase represents the first step in the activation of this protected natural area, aimed at transforming Forte Begato into a premium visitor orientation center and a strategic hub dedicated to the promotion of Genoa’s hinterland and outdoor tourism. Furthermore, the project envisions an integrated cultural and service pole designed to host a synergy of public and private functions, including museum galleries, educational facilities, event venues, athletic infrastructure, hospitality accommodations, and professional catering services. Complementing this vision is the Granarolo-Begato Sport Park, slated for development across the former Granarolo Batteries and the Forte Begato district. The Municipality of Genoa’s program prioritizes the valorization of historical and natural assets through the extensive redevelopment of the hillside trail network, optimized for hiking, mountain biking, and hand-biking. The development scope further includes specialized outdoor infrastructure—such as a suspension bridge, an adventure park, dedicated climbing areas, and a bike park-alongside the restoration of the former Batterie and a significant upgrade to regional accessibility, highlighted by the forthcoming Granarolo-Forte Begato aerial tramway.
